Fire rips through downtown building

AFD is investigating a fire that ripped through an abandoned downtown building  Saturday.

The building is on West Avenue, between 15th and 16th streets. AFD says there was heavy fire on the first and second floor when they arrived on-scene at about 6:00 Saturday morning. Firefighters initially had difficulty battling the blaze due to downed power lines in the rear of the building.

AFD officials say crews began fighting the fire from ladder trucks once they learned the building was abandoned. Investigators are working to determine the cause. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
