UT regents approve partnership to build world’s largest telescope

AUSTIN (KXAN) — University of Texas Regents gave the go ahead in Austin Friday to partner in building the world’s largest telescope.

The Giant Magellan Telescope will open in 2020 if construction goes right in Chile, in the foothills of Andes Mountains.

UT’s authorized $50 million in research reserves and wants to contribute $100 million to construction, about 10 percent of the cost.

Texas A&M is also a founding member of the project.
