SXSW road closures will make getting around downtown Austin difficult

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Some may call it the most wonderful time of the year. Others might not feel the exact same way, because South by Southwest brings in a lot of people, traffic and road closures.

Along Sixth Street, one of the main arteries through downtown, will be closed from east of Interstate 35 all the way down to Brazos Street.

A lot of activities will be happening along Sixth Street and a lot of people will be on foot as well.  Keep in mind many side streets, including Trinity, Neches and San Jacinto will be closed from 5th to 7th.

Trinity Street will also be closed closer to the Austin Convention Center.

Several roads in the Rainey Street district, including Red River Street, will also be closed.

I-35 will be packed as people try to make their way into the downtown area., so if you are trying to avoid the festival, it’s probably safe to say you should stay away from the downtown area altogether.

MetroRail will offer extended hours during the SXSW in an effort to relieve vehicle traffic downtown and to offer festival-goers another option.
