New SXSW app helps you avoid human traffic

AUSTIN (KXAN) — For those looking to stay away from the SXSW masses, local ad agency GSD&M’s new app called “Avoid Humans” may just be your survival guide this upcoming week.

“The idea behind Avoid Humans is basically to tell people where to go, where people aren’t,” said Ryan Carroll, the group creative director behind Avoid Humans.

Avoid Humans is a web-based app, which means it can’t be downloaded from the App Store or iTunes. To access the app, simply type in into the web browser of any phone, tablet or computer.

The app lists four categories where you can get away from the crowds: restaurants, bars, coffee shops and places of refuge, or quiet places like Barton Springs where people can go to relax.

“We even set up our own place of refuge here at GSD&M,” said Carroll. “It’s just a place where people can come and sit down, charge their phones and not be surrounded by the insanity of SXSW.”

Avoid Humans was initially developed exclusively for SXSW, but GSD&M is now looking to expand the app.

“It’s gotten a huge response,” said Carroll. “It took off a lot faster than we expected, which is great.

“I think we’re going to go back and look at other APIs (application programming interface)…to make our data more accurate. We’re also looking into how we can expand the categories we’ve chosen, and how we can apply this to other events like Formula 1 and ACL, and of course to other cities as well.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
