AUSTIN (KXAN) — The capital city is the top choice for Texans hitting the road this spring break, according to a AAA Texas poll.

Twenty-one percent of those polled chose Austin as their vacation destination. San Antonio was second with 14 percent.

“Austin’s South by Southwest festival is a big reason for the city’s No. 1 status on this year’s poll,” said Rhonda Wilson, AAA Texas’ vice president of branch operations.

A spring break trip was defined in the poll as a trip at least 50 miles away from home that required an overnight stay during March, April or May.

Galveston and the Dallas/Fort Worth area tied for third, and Houston checked in just behind them.

The top out-of-state destinations for Texans this spring break are New Orleans and Las Vegas, with 9 percent of travelers planning to visit those cities.

The poll showed 64 percent of the state’s residents planned to take at least one spring vacation this year, up nine percent from last year.

A large chunk of Texans are also planning to take multiple trips this season. Sixty-seven percent of those planning trips will take two or more spring getaways, compared to 49 percent in 2013 and 44 percent in 2012.

The poll surveyed 553 AAA Texas members from Feb. 26 to March 4. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
