AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo arrested a man who was allegedly drunk and passed out behind the wheel of his car.

Acevedo said he was driving down East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on Friday afternoon when he saw a car stopped in the right turn lane to head north on the Interstate 35 frontage road.

When the chief walked up to the car, he said the engine was running. Christopher Colvin had his foot on the brake — with the car still in drive — but was passed out behind the wheel, according to the police report.

Acevedo put the car in park and said he asked Colvin to get out of the car when he saw an open beer can in the center console and smelled alcohol on Colvin.

Police booked Colvin, 44, into jail and charged him with driving while intoxicated.
