Development begins on new health center

The 70,000-square-foot flagship facility opening this fall will provide vital health care services to residents of Southeast Travis County, who are mostly young, Hispanic, and medically underserved.

AUSTIN (KXAN)- Southeast Travis County is about to get a new option when it comes to comprehensive health and wellness services.

Central Health had a wall-breaking ceremony Saturday to dedicate their new $11.7 million project. The site was the old VA Outpatient Clinic.

More than 500,000 residents will be served by the facility, mostly from Dove Springs and Montopolis neighborhoods. It’s an area that currently has few medical options.

Neighbors were surveyed and the new Health and Wellness Center is one of the results.

“We will have it tailored to the way we need it,” said Edward Reyes, President of the Dove Springs Neighborhood Association. “In order to meet our needs we need that feedback from the community.”

Phase One of the new Health & Wellness Center on Montopolis Drive will include primary care, a dental clinic, specialty care, radiology, a lab and pharmacy, opening this October.

A more extensive Phase Two will open in 2015. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
