AUSTIN (KXAN) – A fire at four-plex in North Austin forced seven people from their homes late Tuesday night.
A resident heard smoke alarms at 9:30 p.m. and called the fire department to the homes in the 11-thousand block of April Drive.
When crews arrived they could see fire showing on an outside wall. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in under 40 minutes.
“In newer construction like this, when we get fires that start inside the walls and between the floors, it tends to move across those void spaces,” said Austin Fire Captain Josh Portie. “It’s a little harder for firefighters to get to, so we spent a lot of time trying to open up the walls and the ceilings a little more meticulously.”
Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked the fire.
“Thank goodness that we had working smoking alarms in the structure,” said Portie.
No one was hurt.
