Horns fall to Stanford, miss out on sweep

Texas missed out on sweeping Stanford, losing the series final 11-5 Sunday afternoon at Disch-Falk Field.

Stanford built a 5-0 lead and took a 10-1 lead in the sixth inning on a two run homerun by Alex Blandino.

Longhorns starter Lukas Schiraldi struggled with control and was replaced before recording an out in the third inning. The Austin native inherited the Sunday starter’s job this week when Augie Garrido named Nathan Thornhill the team’s closer.

Garrido was ejected from the game in the third inning after he stormed on to the field to dispute a balk called on reliever Travis Duke that plated a run.

Center fielder Mark Payton continued his torrid start, going 1-2 with three walks. The reigning Big 12 Player of the Week finished the weekend 8-10 at the plate with five walks.

The loss snaps a five game winning streak for Texas. Next is Tuesday afternoon matchup with UT-Pan American. First pitch from Disch-Falk Field is set for 4:30.
