AISD celebrates African-American history

AUSTIN (KXAN)- Austin ISD celebrated African-American Heritage on Sunday by honoring some of its top achieving minority students.

Ten high school seniors who earned the highest grade point in their grades were awarded college scholarships.

There are some 7,000 African American students in the Austin district. That makes up about 8% of the total enrollment.

And some really good news coming out of the school system, graduation rates among them have improved by 14%. Black high school students in Austin now graduate at a rate of 80%. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
