Urban rail plan unveiled, construction still years away

AUSTIN — Officials unveiled results of a public survey about where Austinites want to see an Urban Rail Line and how it would cross the city at a Project Connect meeting Friday.

The rail would run from East Riverside — through Downtown — north to the Austin Community College-Highland campus.

“In fact, we are embracing crossing the river,” said Kyle Keahey with HNTB, an architecture and engineering firm. “We need to understand the cost and what the benefit is to be able to get out to East Riverside to provide an opportunity to bring those residents into the employment base in the downtown core.”

Organizers acknowledged it could eventually lead to other ideas, such as a subway line.

Leaders will now try to put a price tag on such a plan and figure out where to put stops.

The next meeting is March 21.
