Lago Vista detective fired over assault complaint from dispatcher

Lawrence Jonap

A LagoVista police detective accused of kicking a dispatcher and later passing gas his face has been fired, officials said.

A court affidavit says Detective Lawrence Jonap kicked communications operator Donald Varner in the back in the police station. The next day, the accusation says, Jonap  hit him on the head with a notebook, flicked him on the ear and passed gas in his face.

Jonap, 45, was charged with assault with injury, a class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine up to $4,000.

Jonap denied the accusations, saying he only “nudged” the victim. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
