AUSTIN (AP) — The Texas Senate Health and Human Services Committee is checking in on women’s health programs as activists prepare to protest the exclusion of Planned Parenthood.

The panel meets Wednesday morning to check on programs approved last year that shifted money away from clinics associated with groups that provide abortions. The Republican-controlled Legislature voted to shift funds into other programs, such as preventive health care.

But women’s health advocates worry that those programs don’t reach the neediest women the same way that clinics like Planned Parenthood did. They say the number of women receiving treatment has dropped and federal health care dollars go unspent.
