Park closure pushes SXSW events elsewhere

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Events organizers scrambled to find a new home for their concerts at the upcoming South by Southwest festival because of ongoing construction at Auditorium Shores.

Free concerts featuring Foster the People and Snoop Dogg will take place at Butler Park, near Auditorium Shores.

The Austin Parks and Recreation Department says they have been working around the clock to accommodate big events forced to relocate.

“Spring is the biggest season here in Austin,” said Jason Maurer, who works with the department. “We will have several hundred thousand people visiting the city in the next few weeks.”

The city says at least five big music and food events will move to Butler Park while Auditorium Shores is under construction.

But with the new location comes new restrictions. The Parks and Recreation Department says event organizers will have to protect the grass and an expensive irrigation system when loading in heavy equipment.

“A lot of the events will ship in panels that are commercially made that are weight distributing panels,” said Maurer. “It protects the ground, our sprinkler irrigation system, our trees.”

Auditorium Shores construction is on schedule and will be completely reopened by spring 2015.

Foster the People previously played in Austin at the 2011 Austin City Limits festival, and held a concert at the Backyard in 2012.

On Thursday, iTunes announced they were launching a music festival, piggybacking on the annual SXSW event with its own music festival.
