Smithville residents are being asked to conserve water while the City works on repairing a broken pump at the water treatment facility.
On Wednesday, the Mayor declared a water emergency. Residents who use water for non-essential purposes could be issued a ticket.
While the City can usually operate with one pump and one well during the winter months, water usage has been up this week due to the warmer temperatures.
“Every winter we use one well with no problems, but the usage this week, we can’t keep up,” explains Tex Middlebrook, Smithville’s City Manager.
Middlebrooks says some people are starting to water their lawns again, which isn’t helping matters.
A company is expected to come out on Thursday to inspect the pump and make any necessary repairs.
