Woman’s death at shopping complex marks Austin’s 6th homicide

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A woman whose body was found in a Northwest Austin shopping center was the victim of an apparent homicide, police said Thursday.

Xiaojia ‘Grace’ Chen, 47, was found Wednesday afternoon inside a bathroom in a second-floor building at the Galleria Oaks shopping center. Police said Chen’s body had been in the room for about two hours before a worker at the complex found her.

Chen and her husband own the Grace Language and Cultural Institute located in the shopping center, police said.

She suffered trauma to her body, police said, but did not provide further details. Authorities were looking for surveillance video, and have not ruled out that the killing could have been random.

Employees who work at other businesses in the shopping center are concerned for her safety.  One employee says, “You’d think in a shopping center like this it wouldn’t be an issue. But, I mean even just parking around the corner, you never know if someone’s waiting.  It’s uncomfortable.”

“The investigators are asking that if you were in the area around 3:30 [p.m.] and saw somebody walking that you normally don’t see here, or if you think someone might be missing, just please call APD because they’re looking at anything that they can to help in their investigation,” said Sgt. Anthony Hipolito with the Austin Police Department.

Police do not have any suspects, and said Chen’s husband was cooperating with authorities.
