GEORGETOWN, Texas (KXAN) — It may seem like just a bridge, but to people in Georgetown and those who come to the area, the new overpass is a big deal.
The Texas Department of Transportation opened the new Lakeway Drive bridge over Interstate 35 on Wednesday. The busy crossover is the only way to get to the other side of the highway for about 4.5 miles, and provides several safety features the old bridge lacked.
Crews worked on the $5.9 million bridge for about three years. It has six lanes — two going each direction, and a turning lane on both sides. It also included a sidewalk and space for bicyclists.
The old Lakeway Drive bridge had just two lanes and was built with an arch, making it hard to see. Several crashes were also reported on the old bridge.
With Georgetown High School less than a mile from the overpass, and the Georgetown Municipal Airport on the west side of the freeway, the area sees plenty of traffic.
“It will probably help with congestion quite a bit,” said Maude Kingsbery.
“The old one was way out of sync with the needs and opportunities to get people form one side to the other,” said Mayor George Garver.
There’s some work left. Crews have to finish the landscaping and taking down parts of the old bridge.
