Flu season claims 16 lives in Austin

Some 16 people in Austin have died of influenza during the current flu season, half of them 60 or older, health officials said Thursday.

Of the deaths, seven died in December 2013, and nine died in January, according to statistics compiled by the Austin-Travis County Health and Human Services

Nationally, health officials have reported that the number of pneumonia and influenza deaths had reached epidemic proportions, a common occurrence during flu season each year.
