LOS ANGELES (NBC/KNBC) — A new coffee shop has opened its doors in Los Angeles, but this one is not only drawing a big crowd, but also plenty of questions.
The coffee shop is called “Dumb Starbucks” — not to be confused with Starbucks.
Dumb Starbucks popped up out of nowhere on Feb. 7.
The logo on the store is exactly the same as Starbucks, but with the word “Dumb” added to it — as are the menu options.
Instead of caramel macchiato or hazelnut frappuccino, it’s “dumb caramel macchiato” and “dumb hazelnut frappuccino.”
The imitation coffee chain claims it can get away with this thanks to “parody law,” saying that by adding the word “dumb” they are technically making fun of Starbucks, which allows them to use the Starbucks trademark under “Fair Use” law.
A spokesperson for the real Starbucks coffee chain says they are looking into this.
