Man detained following deadly Northeast Austin rollover

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The driver of an SUV was being held on an immigration and naturalization detainer after a passenger riding in the vehicle was killed following a rollover crash on Sunday.

Austin police say Roberto Ibarra-Sandoval, 39, was driving a Ford Expedition eastbound along the U.S. Highway 290  service road near Johnny Morris Road at a high rate of speed shortly before 6 p.m. The vehicle had to take evasive action to avoid hitting a vehicle it came up on and left the roadway before cutting back across traffic and rolling over, ejecting a man in his 30s, police said.

The man ejected from the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the driver and a front seat passenger were taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge with serious, though not life-threatening, injuries.

The cause is under investigation, but police said Sunday they believe speed played a factor.

Ibarra-Sandoval was being held in Travis County Jail. Charges against him were pending.

The crash happened on what now is the main highway until the Highway 290 Toll Road is open; on the one-way portion of the road, which will eventually be the frontage road.
