Two killed in Northwest Austin crash

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Two people died in a Northwest Austin crash Tuesday when one driver ran a red light.

Austin police said the crash happened in the intersection of Research Boulevard and Balcones Woods Drive about 2:34 p.m.

According to witnesses, a black Ford SUV was traveling northbound on the frontage road when it collided with a silver 4-door Honda Civic that was going eastbound on Balcones Wood Drives.

“One of the vehicle’s ran a red light,” said Senior Police Officer Veneza Bremner. “As of right now, we don’t know who ran the red light.”

A female passenger in the Civic died at the scene; the driver of the Civic was transported to a nearby hospital but he died a short time later. The driver of the SUV was not injured and is cooperating with authorities.

All northbound lanes along the service road as well as eastbound lanes on Balcones Woods Drive were closed while authorities investigated the crash. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
