Popular UT sculptures move to temporary location

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Three popular sculptures on UT’s campus have been moved to a temporary location while construction for the Dell Medical School begins.

On Monday, Charles Umlauf’s Three Muses were moved from Centennial Park, right across the Frank Erwin Center, to the Umaluf Sculpture Garden and Museum off Robert E. Lee Road by Zilker Park.

UT first commissioned the sculptures in 1963 and originally placed them by the Flawn Academic Center. The statues stayed there for nearly 20 years until they were moved to its most recent location on Red River.

This move also gives curators a chance to clean up and restore the sculptures after some vandalism to the original work.

“You can probably see the statues have lipstick and nail polish on them that wasn’t part of Umlauf’s plan, so we’ll work with conservators to have that removed, clean them up, wax them, wash them and restore them to the way they were in 1963,” said Katie Robinson Edwards, Curator of the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum.

The statues will remain at the Umlauf Garden and Museum until 2016, when Dell Medical school expects to welcome its first class of students.
