Domestic violence call turns into a SWAT situation

The Austin Police Department SWAT team successfully negotiated an end to a standoff with a domestic violence suspect late Monday night.

Officers originally went to the home in the 7000 block of Kildare Cove, in East Austin, just before 8 p.m. for a domestic violence call.

An injured woman was outside of the home but a man stayed inside and refused to come out.  APD called in SWAT to assist at 8:40 p.m.

“The officers saw him go into the house and they had a good perimeter on the house,” said APD Corporal David Boyd.  “We were very confident that he was still inside the house so we were using as many tactics as we could to get him to come out peacefully before anybody had to go in.”

SWAT officers tried to negotiate with the man for three hours before deploying distraction devices.  The man finally surrendered at 11:40 p.m.

Boyd said the man needed medical treatment before he could be taken to jail.  He expects the man to be charged with assault with injury/family violence. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
