Police seek photog who recorded brawl near station last week

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police are looking for a person who recorded a fight in January on  Sixth Street that is being investigated as a robbery assault.

Police say the January 26th footage shows two groups exchanging words and then a fight erupts.  Someone uploaded the fight to several social network sites, but that person has yet to contact police.

“Some of the people who were in the video actually contacted us. We would like the person who actually shot the video to come forward. We would like to speak to that person,” said Sgt. Jonathan Herring with the APD Robbery Unit.

The incident is being investigated as a robbery assault since the footage shows evidence of one person taking property off of another person after the fight. One man is kicked repeatedly as he’s lying on the ground.

Some calls did come in to 911 to report the fight, but when officers responded, no one was at the scene.

The fight occurred just feet away from APD headquarters.

The fight comes on the heels of improving downtown crime statistics.  In 2012, there were 110 robberies and 211 assaults in the downtown Austin area. In 2013, there were 88 robberies, and 134 assaults in the same area. That breaks down to just under two robberies a week in downtown Austin in 2013.

Police say they are also going through the footage captured by any surveillance cameras at nearby businesses. They are hoping one of them captured not only the fight, but also the person recording all of it.
