Looking ahead to the March primaries

"State of Texas: In-Depth"

On the inaugural edition of our new political program “State of Texas: In-depth,” KXAN looks ahead to the March primaries and breaks down the biggest races with the most competitive candidates statewide.

First up, we profile Texas Commissioner of Agriculture Todd Staples, who is running for the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor.

“It is my belief that the incumbent, David Dewhurst, is an example of failed leadership, not accomplishing what he needs to,” Staples said in our one-on-one interview. “Politicians are kind of like socks they need to be changed regularly.”

In the coming weeks we will highlight the other three Republicans running for this office, as well as the only democratic candidate – Sen. Leticia Van De Putte, D-San Antonio. Plus, our political roundtable with the Texas Tribune’s Morgan Smith and the Texas Politics Project’s Jim Henson.

You can check out “State Of Texas: In-Depth” every Sunday morning during KXAN News Today at 8:30., right before NBC’s Meet The Press.
