Austin food trailers find new prime spot to call home

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The development boom around Austin has made it harder for food trailers to find permanent homes. But a new park coming to Barton Springs Road is hoping to solve those woes.

Just last May, the famous South Congress food trailer park shut down for redevelopment forcing trucks like The Mighty Cone to find a new place to call their own while trying to keep business from dropping too far.

“Even though we have foot traffic here (in West Campus), the availability is not as good as it was before,” said Lisa Alhades, a Mighty Cone employee.

In March, a permanent food trailer park called “The Picnic” will open on Barton Springs Road just down the street from Zilker Park.  The one-acre site will offer guests pavilions, air conditioned restrooms, and 80 on site parking spots.

For The Mighty Cone, the location is key.

“Barton Springs has a little more foot traffic, and a little more variety of customers that we were used to before,” said Alhades.

The Picnic will house eight of Austin’s favorite food trucks including “The Mighty Cone”, “Hey Cupcake”, “Turf & Surf Po’ Boy”, “Tapas Bravas”, “Hey You Gonna Eat or What”,”The Seedling Truck”,  “Ms. P’s Electric Cock”, and “Skinny Limits”. The vendors will sign leases to mark their spot while hoping the new venue will be the place they can finally call home forever.

The lot will be located in front of the Coldwater Luxury Apartments on Barton Springs Road.
