Four members of a rock band who grew up in a police state have a dream: they want to come to Austin.

The guys in the band “Side Effect” are from Myanmar, which used to be called Burma. They’re now trying to raise money so they can come to town and play the South by Southwest Music Festival.

Their country was a military dictatorship for more than 50 years. That officially ended in 2011.

If they raise enough money, the band hopes to tour the U.S. after coming to Austin. They still have a lot of money to raise. We’ll let you know how their fundraising project works out. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
