Ice shuts down schools, services citywide

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The trouble from the weather didn’t stop when the roads cleared up, as offices and schools shut down.

Friday trash and recycling service was delayed until Saturday in Austin.

Capital Metro ran on a limited Saturday schedule.

Austin and Travis county offices closed. Only essential personnel were to report in.

Schools shutdown from AISD to the UT campus.

“This is usually gone before you even get up,” said Laurie Pixley pointing to the yard waste at her curb. “And then the recycling is next and then the trash comes a little bit later.”

Pixley’s trash still rests at the roadside. She also tried to call the city with a billing question.

“They said closed to inclement weather,” Pixley said.

Across town, streets were quieter than typical for a Friday.

“It was a pretty carefree day,” said Daniel O’Brien, a UT student. “Just got to take it like an actual snow day even though it’s really nice out.

A city spokesperson said salaried employees who had to take the day off would still get paid.

The answer about pay was more difficult to track down for hourly employees because city offices were officially closed Friday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
