CALDWELL COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) – A woman was killed when her car went into oncoming traffic and struck an 18-wheeler along U.S. Highway 183 in Caldwell County.

The crash happened just south of Lockhart about 8:30 p.m., according to the Department of Public Safety.

Witnesses told troopers the woman was driving southbound when her car crossed the center line causing a semi traveling in the opposite direction to swerve. The two did not crash head-on but still side-swiped each other.

The semi then lost control and went into a ditch, hitting a row of trees. The driver of the truck was expected to OK.

The highway was closed down for several hours while officers conducted their investigation but opened again before 1 a.m.
