LOCKHART, Texas (KXAN) – The family of a man and two boys killed over the weekend in a car crash are begging for change at an intersection they say is dangerous.
Joe Anthony Salas-Castro, 29, of Lockhart, and his two sons, 9-year-old Joe Anthony Salas and 4-year-old Jayden Joshua Salas, died Saturday in a collision at the intersection of U.S Highway 183 and FM 1185 in Caldwell County.
According to the Department of Public Safety, there have been seven crashes at that intersection since July, including a nearly identical deadly wreck back in November.
“Every time we passed through here we always said something was going to happen,” Juanita Salas said, sobbing at the site of the crash that killed her brother and two nephews.
“Something needs to happen,” she said. “They need to change this. They need to.”
According to investigators, her brother, Joseph Salas-Castro was driving with his two boys and his girl when a FedEx van drove through a flashing red light, slamming into their car.
Edie Tatum helped pull 2-year-old Jazalynn out. Investigators said the girl was the only one wearing a seatbelt.
“It was very hard,” Tatum said. “She was crying and her hand reached up and I touched it and she grabbed my hand.”
Salas hopes the Texas Department of Transportation and the county change the intersection soon before more lives are lost.
“There have been wrecks after wrecks,” she said. “Every time I go through here I see a wreck at this light.”
That stretch of the highway has seen several changes in the last few years. According to TxDOT, about 500 more people used that stretch in 2012 than in 2011. During that time, the State Highway 130 toll road opened south of Mustang Ridge.
Because of the holiday, officials with TxDOT and DPS were not available to answer more questions about the intersection.
