Although UT students were still on winter break Sunday, people on campus were talking about one thing — news of the university’s new football coach.
“He’s done a great job recruiting, like with Teddy Bridgewater making a great quarterback,” UT fan Lorin Buckner said. “I think he’ll continue that success here at Texas.”
Even though a UT football game isn’t on the schedule for months, the official Texas Longhorn Team Shop that sits at the foot of DKR Memorial Stadium was open Sunday.
Store employees and Longhorn fans seemed to have an optimistic outlook on the hire of Charlie Strong, sharing excitement about the potential talent he’ll bring to the program.
“I know that he’s one of the best recruiters out of Florida,” Official Team Shop Events Manager Cameron Popovits said. “Which is phenomenal because, evidently, the best football players come out of Texas and Florida.”
Fans said they hope Strong also spends time recruiting close to home.
“He’s going to need some time to recruit, and he’s got to recruit the state of Texas really strong,” Buckner added.
