Dawn Denny joined KXAN in October of 2013 to resume her reporting career. Dawn received her undergraduate degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and her Master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
She has several years of reporting experience. An Emmy award winner, she has worked as a general assignment and investigative reporter in several cities including New Orleans, Tampa, Philadelphia and Phoenix. She has appeared on Dateline and the Montel Williams show for breaking national news stories. Dawn has received several Associated Press and Society of Professional Journalists awards for her reporting and writing. Dawn was also honored with a professional conduct award by the Arizona Department of Education for the manner in which she covered a school shooting on and off the air.
Dawn left television news a few years ago to spend more time with her children. During that time, she worked in special education doing behavior modification in two school districts, volunteered extensively with schools and her church, and wrote a book. Her second book is currently in progress. Dawn and her family moved to the Austin area recently for her husband’s cinematography work in the film industry.
When she’s not working, Dawn can be found cheering loudly at her kids’ sporting events, writing, or sitting on the fire pit watching the sunset with her husband. Dawn and her husband love to scuba dive and have traveled to many places including Belize and the Turks and Caicos to enjoy the sport. She also loves to talk to people and will stop to listen to anyone who has a story to tell. One of her favorite quotes is, “if you don’t like what’s being said, change the conversation.”
