AUSTIN (KXAN) – Raul Rodriguez-Cortez, 17, was charged with stabbing his mother, Maribel Cortez, to death on Thursday night.
Police were called shortly after 6 p.m. to 1601 E. Anderson Lane, in reference to a stabbing. Rodriguez-Cortez was arrested a few hours later following a traffic stop in Blanco County.
According the arrest warrant, an unidentified juvenile daughter of Cortez, 35, was told by Rodriguez-Cortez that he and their mother had gotten into a heated argument and he pushed her. He said this caused their mom to suffer a heart attack and die, and that paramedics had taken her away.
After her brother left, the child discovered her mother’s body on the floor with a knife protruding from her chest in Rodriguez-Cortez’s bedroom, the affidavit said.
Rodriguez-Cortez left the home in his mother’s truck, which he was stopped in later that night. A search of the vehicle turned up his mother’s purse and wallet.
The report also said the teen had “extensive mental and emotional illnesses, and has made threats to harm himself and wanting to die.” Investigators also learned from Maribel Cortez’s sister that he made threats to others.
He was booked into Travis County Jail on Friday. Bond was set at $250,000.
